Gateway’s New Ultraportable…

2009 June 27

After reading up on http://JKontherun.com, one of my fav websites, I found out that Gateway was coming out with a “Notebook” with a Netbook Soul. So I decided to check out the specs on this new netbook (I think it qualifies as a Netbook even though it has a screen bigger than 10 inches. I categorize it as a netbook for the following:

  1. It has no optical drive
  2. It runs on a single core processor (in this case, the AMD instead of Intel Atom)
  3. It also comes with many of the other features.

Some of the key elements I particularly like about this netbook are the following:

  • The ATI Radeon chipset. I’m thinking this computer is capable of superb youtube playback and 720p HD playback.
  • The fact that it’s using the AMD CPU, giving it a little more boost.
  • 250GB Hard Drive and Multi-Card reader. For all your multimedia files.
  • 2GB of RAM stock. We’ll have to see if you can bump it up.

The bad:

  • Windows Vista SP1…hahaha, are you serious?
  • 0.3 MP webcam
  • Bloatware (MS Works and Norton)
  • 11.6 screen. (I don’t know if it’s bad…)

The price for this netbook is $399.99 USD. It’ll probably be available by late summer or early fall.

If anyone gets it, drop me a line.

I wonder how well it can run Linux, cuz if I get it…Windows Vista is going down. I also wonder if Acer will put Windows 7 on this when it comes out, since it’ll probably run it decently.

I know own one of these and like an idiot, even though I am a Linux user in all 6 of my rigs, I didn’t check for Linux compatibility. Ubuntu Nebook Remix has nothing since it does not use a atom and Ubuntu has nothing yet. I have gone through this before years ago when using Linux on my laptop and had to use tools like ndiswrapper for wifi and be a member of a bunch of bug smashing teams, since I’m not talented enough to device driver write.
You are correct in that the single core AMD 64 does not contain hyper-threading so background running apts will share The CPU cycles and slow things down, allot.
I could not resist a 11 inch AMD 64 lappy, So I’ll email you with success and or failure.
Gateway LT3103u ubuntu google search brought me here. It’s going to be a long day.
    Thanks.
